Abortion

In today’s society with fear of God waning in human beings, abortions have become common with no remorse or compunction even among believers. The reason as to why believers also don’t feel "it is wrong to abort" is because they are not aware of what the word of God says. Today abortion is legal as per the civil laws of many countries. Just because an act is legal according to civil law, however, does not make it morally right. We must obey God rather than men (Acts 5:29). Abortion's defenders often argue that, if the mother does not "want" to have the child, she may abort it. But does a mother have the right to decide whether to have a child or not?

The question which every believer should pose before thinking on abortion is how does God view abortion?

The purpose of this study is to consider exactly what the Bible teaches about abortion.

1) In Exodus 21:22 (GNB) "If some men are fighting and hurt a pregnant woman so that she loses her child, but she is not injured in any other way, the one who hurt her is to be fined whatever amount the woman's husband demands, subject to the approval of the judges.

From this we observe, that the law of Moses, clearly indicates that any man who induces an abortion or miscarriage is to be punished, indicating that God values life before birth even when the child is in the womb.

2) The psalmist says -(Psalms 22:9-10) Yet Thou art He who didst bring me forth from the womb; Thou didst make me trust when upon my mother's breasts. Upon Thee I was cast from birth; Thou hast been my God from my mother's womb. Psalmist says that God was his God even when he was in his mothers womb. If God is your God even when you are in the womb it means that God is valuing the foetus in the womb as a living being, and if God values anything as a living being then no one deliberately has the right to take the life of a living human being . If one takes the life deliberately then he is subject to punishment.

3) In Isaiah God reveals that he is the Lord who formed Jacob from the womb. Now if God is the one who formed the human in the womb then what right has anyone to take the life of the one who God has formed? - Isaiah 44:2 Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen. The Bible is full of examples of men and woman who were chosen by God from the womb.

Unless God considered them as valuable even during the period of stay in the womb he would not have chosen them in the womb. They could have been chosen after being born from the mothers womb.

Some of the people chosen by God from the Womb

a. Samson

Judges 13:6 Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name: Judges 13:7 But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death.

b. Isaiah

Isaiah 49:1 Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.

c. David

Psalm 22:10 I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly.

d. Jeremiah

Jeremiah 1:4 Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

e. John the Baptist

Luke 1:15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

f. Paul

Galatians 1:15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace, All of the above verses tell us God considers us to be human even before we are born.

Abortion is wrong

Because it is a result of lack of knowledge and understanding of how God views a baby in the mothers womb. It is wrong because it constitutes the deliberate killing of an innocent human being created by God with a spirit. We have to understand that the unborn baby is a human being, a separate individual from its mother. Therefore, deliberately killing it would be just as wrong as killing any other innocent human being.

This article is not written with the intent to condemn those who have aborted their babies or participated in decisions to do so. It is written to give an awareness to all believers God’s view on the baby in a mothers womb.

What should a woman do if she has aborted a baby and now realizes she did wrong?

She does not need to spend the rest of her life with the burden of unforgiven guilt. The Bible says abortion is wrong, but it also offers a source of true forgiveness through the blood of Jesus Christ. Once we understand that we have gone wrong and committed an error we should turn to God and ask him forgiveness for the act done out of ignorance and lack of knowledge. God will forgive if we will come to Him according to His conditions. Once forgiveness is asked for after true repentance the woman should not allow a spirit of condemnation to keep on condemning her. She should rest on the assurance of the word that God has forgiven her and she is now clean in the sight of God

1John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Romans 8:1

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
